A BEC is one of the best and cheapest devices you can put on your helicopter. With a Brushless ESC most of them have an internal BEC that can help to regulate the voltage to your receiver which is powering your servos and gyro. The problem with that sort of BEC which is a linear BEC is that it is susceptible to heat from the ESC and when it gets too hot it can cause glitching and lockouts.

So by getting a stand alone BEC or (Battery Eliminator Circuit) it now takes over the sole job of regulating voltage to your receiver and servos which then leaves the job of the ESC to just power the motor, which is what it is best at doing. Another benefit is if you are flying and your ESC burns up on you, you may lose power to your motor, but as long as your BEC is still functioning you will have power to your servos so you can hopefully perform an autorotation. This is one of the best and cheapest upgrades for your helicopter. Everyone should be running a BEC on their electric power helicopter. Let us know if you have any other questions.

2.5. Compare linear BEC with switch-mode BEC: When using a lithium battery pack more than 3s, a switch-mode BEC has much higher efficiency than linear BEC.

2.5.1. For a traditional linear BEC: For example?a 4s lithium battery pack has a typical voltage of 14.8V, in order to let BEC outputs 5V/1A, the current flow into BEC is at least 1A, so the power on BEC is 14.8V* 1A=14.8W. But the useful output power is only 5V*1A=5W, so the efficiency of BEC is 5W/14.8W=33.8%, the redundant power 14.8W-5W=9.8W changes to heat, which makes the BEC very hot.

2.5.2. For a switch-mode BEC: In the above case, in order to let BEC outputs 5V/1A, the current flow into BEC is only 0.38A (actual test data), so the power on BEC is 14.8V* 0.38V=5.6W, and the efficiency of BEC is 5W/5.6W=89.3%.
